A Smile in His Lifetime

평생의 미소

Mokugen was never known to smile until his last day on earth. 

Mokugen은 지구에서 그의 마지막 날까지 웃음이라는 것을 몰랐다.

When his time came to pass away he said to his faithful ones: 

죽을날이 왔을때 그는 그의 신자들에게 말했다.

“You have studied under me for more than ten years. 

 "당신들은 내 밑에서 10년이상 공부했다.

Show me your real interpretation of Zen.

나에게 당신들의 선에 대한 진정한 해석을 보여주시오. Whoever expresses this most clearly shall by my successor and 

receive my robe and bowl.”

이것을 가장 명확하게 표현하는 자는 나의 후계자가 될것이고 나의 가사와 발우를 받을거이오."

Everyone watched Mokugen’s severe face, but no one answered.

모두가 Mokugen의 진지한 얼굴을 보았지만 아무도 대답하지 않았다.

Encho, a disciple who had been with his teacher for a long time, moved near the bedside. 

Encho, 그의 스승과 오랜시간 함께 했던 제자 하나가 옆으로 옮겨왔다.

He pushed forward the medicine cup a few inches. 

그는 약사발을 몇 인치 앞으로 밀었다.

This was his answer to the command.

이것이 그의 답이었다.

The teacher’s face became even more severe. 

스승의 얼굴이 더 심각하게 변했다.

“Is that all you understand?” he asked.

 "이것이 다인가?" 그가 물었다.

Encho reached out and moved the cup back again.

Encho는 손을 뻗어 그 사발을 다시 제자리에 가져다 놓았다.

A beautiful smile broke over the features of Mokugen. 

아름다운 미소가 Mokugen의 얼굴에 일었다.

“You rascal,” he told Encho. 

 "이 악당놈아," 그는 Encho에게 말했다.

“You worked with me ten years and have not yet seen my whole body. 

 "너는 나와 10년을 공부했는데 나의 전신을 아직 보지 못했구나.

Take the robe and bowl. They belong to you.”

가사와 발우를 가져가라. 그것들은 너의 것이다."
