A Buddha

부처

In Tokyo in the Meiji era there lived two prominent teachers of opposite characteristics. 

토쿄 메이지 시대에 상반되는 성격을 가진 두명의 눈에 띄는 스승이 살고 있었다.

One, Unsho, an instructor in Shingon, kept Buddha’s precepts scrupulously. 

한명은,Unsho로 Shingo에서 가르쳤으며 부처의 가르침을 철저하게 지켰다.

He never drank intoxicants, nor did he eat after eleven o’clock in the morning. 

그는 술을 절대 마시지 않았으며,오전 11시이후에는 먹지 않았다.

The other teacher, Tanzan, a professor of philosophy at the Imperial University, never observed the precepts.

다른 스승인 Tanzan은 Imperial대학의 철학교수였는데 가르침을 절대 따르지 않았다.

When he felt like eating, he ate, and when he felt like sleeping in the daytime, he slept.

먹고 싶을때 먹고,자고 싶을때는 낮에도 잤다.

One day Unsho visited Tanzan, who was drinking wine at the time, not even a drop of which is supposed to touch 

the tongue of a Buddhist.

어느날 Unsho가 Tanzan을 방문했는데 술을마시고 있었다. 불교도의 혀에는 한방울도 허용되지 않는 술을.

“Hello, brother,” Tanzan greeted him. “Won’t you have a drink?”

 "여보게,사제" Tanzan이 그를 반겼다. "한잔할텐가?"

“I never drink!” exclaimed Unsho solemnly.

 "술을 절대 안마십니다!" Unsho는 단호하게 외쳤다.

“One who does not drink is not even human,” said Tanzan.

 "술을 마시지 않는 사람은 사람도 아니지." Tanzan이 말했다.

“Do you mean to call me inhuman just because I do not indulge in intoxicating liquids!” exclaimed Unsho in 

anger. 

 "제가 그 취하게 하는 액체를 마시지 않는다는 이유로 저를 인간이 아니라고 하십니까?" Unsho가 화가나서 소리쳤다.

“Then if I am not human, what am I?”

 "제가 인간이 아니라면, 그럼 뭡니까?"

“A Buddha,” answered Tanzan.

 "부처지" Tanzan이 대답했다.

* precept : 교훈

* scrupulously : 고지식하게

* intoxicant : 술,취하게하는

* indulge : 실컷마시다.
