A university student while visiting Gasan asked him: “Have you ever read the Christian Bible?”

Gasan을 방문한 한 대학생이 물었다 : "성경을 읽어보신 적 있으세요?"

“No, read it to me,” said Gasan.

 "아니, 나에게 읽어주렴." Gasan이 말했다.

The student opened the bible and read from St. Matthew:

학생은 성경을 열어서 마태복음을 읽었다.

 “And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lillies of the field, how they grow. 

  "옷에 대해 염려하느냐? 들의 백합을 보아라. 그들이 어떻게 자라는지.

They toil not, neither do they spin, and yet I say unto you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed 

like one of these.

그들은 수고하지도 않고 짓지도 않는다. 그리고 너에게 말하니 Solomon의 모든 영광 조차도 이것만 같지 못하였다.    

… Take therefore no thought for the morrow, for the morrow shall take thought for things of itself.”

    그러므로 다음날을 염려하지 마라. 다음날은 다음날에 염려할 것이다."

Gasan said: “Whoever uttered those words I consider an enlightened man.”

Gasan이 말했다. "누구든 그말을 하는자를 나는 깨달은 자라고 생각한다."

The student continued reading:

학생이 계속 읽었다.

 “Ask and it shall be given to you, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you. 

  "구하라 그러면 얻을것이고, 찾으로 그러면 찾을 것이요, 두드려랴 그러면 열릴 것이다.

For everyone that asketh receiveth, and he that seeketh findeth, and to him that knocketh, it shall be opened.”

받기를 구하는 자, 찾기를 구하는 자, 두드리는 자, 그것은 열릴것이다."

Gasan remarked: “That is excellent. Whoever said that is not far from Buddhahood.”

Gasan이 말했다 : "훌륭하다. 그런말을 하는자 불성과 거리가 멀지 않구나."
