Gates of Paradise

A soldier named Nobushige came to Hakuin, and asked: “Is there really a paradise and a hell?”

Nobushige라는 군인이 Hakuin선사에게 와서 물었다. "천국과 지옥이 정말 있습니까?"

“Who are you?” inquired Hakuin.

 "당신은 누구요?" Hakuin선사가 물었다.

“I am a samurai,” the warrior replied.

 "무사입니다." 군인이 대답했다.

“You, a soldier!” exclaimed Hakuin.

 "당신,군인!" Hakuin선사가 외쳤다.

“What kind of ruler would have you as his guard? Your face looks like that of a beggar.”

 "그의 보호자로 어떤 통치자를 당신은 가지고 있소? 당신의 얼굴은 마치 거지와 같소."

Nobushige became so angry that he began to draw his sword, but Hakuin continued: 

Nobushige는 매우 화가 나서 그의 칼을 뽑기 시작했다. 하지만 Hakuin선사는 계속했다.

“So you have a sword! Your weapon is probably much too dull to cut off my head.”

 "칼을 가지고 있구만! 내 머리를 자르기에는 그 칼이 너무 무딘거 같구만."

As Nobushige drew his sword Hakuin remarked: “Here open the gates of hell!”

Nobushige가 칼을 뽑았을떄 Hakuin선사가 대답했다. "여기 지옥의 문이 열리는 구나!"

At these words the samurai, perceiving the master’s discipline, sheathed his sword and bowed.

이말에 무사는 선사의 가르침을 이해하고 그의 칼을 다시넣고 절하였다.

“Here open the gates of paradise,” said Hakuin.

 "여기 천국의 문이 열리는구나" 선사가 말했다.
