Fire-Poker Zen

Hakuin used to tell his pupils about an old woman who had a teashop, praising her understanding of Zen. 

Hakuin선사는 그의 제자들에게 그녀의 선에 대한 이해를 자랑하는 한 찻집 노파에 대해 얘기하곤 했다.

The pupils refused to believe what he told them and would go to the teashop to find out for themselves.

제자들은 그말을 믿지 않아 직접 알아보기 위해 찻집으로 갔다.

Whenever the woman saw them coming she could tell at once whether they had come for tea or to look into her 

grasp of Zen. 

그녀는 그들이 오는 것을 볼때마다 차마시러 오는건지 아니면 선에 대한 이해를 조사하러 오는 건지 알수있었다.

In the former case, she would serve them graciously. 

전자같은 경우면 그녀는 우아하게 그들을 대접했다.

In the latter, she would beckon the pupils to come behind her screen. 

후자면, 그녀의 스크린 뒤로 그 제자들을 유혹하곤 했다.

The instant they obeyed, she would strike them with a fire-poker.

그들이 그렇게 하는 순간, 불쏘시개로 그들을 때리곤 했다.

Nine out of ten of them could not escape her beating.

10에 아홉은 그녀에게서 도망칠수가 없었다.
