Drop of Water

A Zen master named Gisan asked a young student to bring him a pail of water to cool his bath.

Gisan선사가 그의 욕조를 식힐 목적으로 한 양동이의 물을 가져오라고 제자에게 말했다.

The student brought the water and, after cooling the bath, threw on to the ground the little that was left over.

제자가 물을 가져와서 욕조를 식힌뒤에 남은 약간의 물을 땅에 버렸다.

“You dunce!” the master scolded him.

 "이 바보야!" 선사가 제자를 꾸짖었다.

 “Why didn’t you give the rest of the water to the plants? 

  "왜 나머지의 물을 풀에다 주지 않느냐?

What right have you to waste even one drop of water in this temple?”

이 절에서 한방울의 물도 낭비할 권리가 너에게 있더냐?"

The young student attained Zen in that instant. 

젊은 제자는 그 순간 선을 얻었다.

He changed his name to Tekisui, which means a drop of water.

그는 그의 이름을 Tekisui, 즉 한방울의 물이라는 의미로 바꿨다.

pail : 양동이

dunce : 바보
