Time to Die

Ikkyu, the Zen master, was very astute even as a boy. His teacher had a precious teacup, a rare antique. Ikkyu happened to break this cup and was greatly perplexed as to what to do.
Hearing the footsteps of his teacher, he held the pieces of the cup behind his back.
When the master appeared, Ikkyu asked: “Master, why do people have to die?”

“This is natural,” explained the older man. “Everything has to die and has just so long to live.”

Ikkyu, producing the shattered cup, suggested: “Your cup had a long life, but it was its time to die.”

죽을때

ikkyu선사는 어릴때 매우 기민하였다. 그의 스승이 매우 귀한 보기드문 골동품인 차컵
을 가지고 있었다. ikkyu는 실수로 컵을 깨뜨렸고 어쩔줄 몰라 매우 당황하였다.
그의 스승의 발소리를 듣고, 그는 그의 등뒤로 컵조각들을 잡고 있었다.
스승이 나타나자 물었다. "스승님, 왜 사람들은 죽어야만합니까?"
"그건 자연적인 것이다." 스승이 설명했다. "모든것은 죽어야만 하고 살만큼 
사는것이다."
ikkyu는 산산조각난 컵을 보여주며 말했다."스승님의 컵은 매우 긴 수명을
가졌지만 좀전에 죽을 때였습니다."
