고요한 마음의고향

15. Here he grieves, hereafter he grieves. In both states the evildoer grieves. He grieves, he afflicted, perceiving the impurity of his own deeds.

악한 짓을 한 사람은

이 세상과 저 세상에서 근심한다

자기 행실이 더러운 걸 보고

그는 슬퍼하고 괴로워한다

16. Here he rejoices, hereafter he rejoices. In both states the welldoer rejoices. He rejoices, exceedingly rejoices, perceiving the purity of his own deeds.

착한 일을 한 사람은

이 세상과 저 세상에서 기뻐한다

자기 행동이 떳떳함을 보고

그는 기뻐하고 즐거워한다

17. Here he suffers, hereafter he suffers. In both states the evildoer suffers. ``Evil have I done'' (thinking thus), he suffers. Furthermore, he suffers, having gone to a woeful state.

못된 짓을 한 사람은

이 세상과 저 세상에서 괴로워한다

'내가 못된 짓을 해구나' 하고 괴로워하고

지옥에 떨어져 거듭 괴로워한다

18. Here he is happy, hereafter he is happy. In both states the welldoer is happy. ``Good have I done'' (thinking thus), he is happy. Furthermore, is he happy, having gone to a blissful state.

착한 일을 한 사람은

이 세상과 저 세상에서 기뻐한다

'착한 일을 했는가' 싶어 기뻐하고

좋은 세상에 가서 거듭 기뻐한다

19. Though much he recites the Sacred Texts, but acts not accordingly, that heedless man is like a cowherd who counts others' kine. He has no share in the fruits of the Holy life.

아무리 경전을 많이 외울지라도

이를 실천하지 않는 방탕한 사람은

남의 소만 세고 있는 소몰이꾼일 뿐

참된 수행자의 대열에 들 수 없다

20. Though little he recites the Sacred Texts, but acts in accordance with the teaching, forsaking lust, hatred and ignorance, truly knowing, with mind well freed, clinging to naught here and hereafter, he shares the fruits 

of the Holy life.

경전을 조금밖에 외울 수 없더라도

진리대로 실천하고

욕망과 분노와 어리석음에서 벗어나

바른 지혜와 해탈을 얻고

이 세상과 저 세상에 메이지 않는 이는

진실한 수행자의 대열에 들 수 있다

11. The one, who takes wrong to be right and right to be wrong, and who thinks always of sensual pleasures, cannot be successful in finding the Truth.

12. The one, who takes right to be right and wrong to be wrong, and who thinks not of sensual pleasures, can be successful in finding the Truth.

13. Even as rain penetrates an ill-thatched house, so does lust penetrate an undeveloped mind.

14. Even as rain does not penetrate a well-thatched house, so does lust not penetrate a well-developed mind.

11. 진실을 거짓이라 생각하고

    거짓을 진실로 생각하는 사람은

    이 잘못된 생각 때문에

    끝내 진실에 이를 수 없다

12. 진실을 진실인 줄 알고

    진실 아닌 것을 아닌 줄 알면

    이런 사람은 그 바른 생각 때문에

    마침내 진실에 이를 수 있다

13. 허술하게 덮은 지붕에

    비가 새듯이

    수행이 덜된 마음에는

    욕망의 손길이 뻗치기 쉽다

14. 잘 덮인 지붕에

    비가 새지 않듯이

    수행이 잘된 마음에는

    욕망이 스며들 틈이 없다

They who have faith in the Buddha have faith in the best, and for those who have faith in the best the result is the best.

부처에 대한 믿음이 있는 사람들은 최상의 믿음을 가지고 있고 최상의 믿음을 가지고 있는 자들에게는 최상의 결과가 있

다.

Whoever lives contemplating pleasant things, with senses unrestrained, in food immoderate, indolent, inactive, him verily Mara overthrows, as the wind (overthrows) a weak tree.

Whoever lives contemplating ``the Impurities'', with senses restrained, in food moderate, full of faith, full of sustained energy, him Mara overthrows not, as the wind (does not overthrow) a rocky mountain.

더러운 것을 깨끗하게 보고

감각의 욕망을 억제하지 않으며

먹고 마시는 일에 절제가 없고

게을러서 정진하지 않는 사람은

악마가 그를 쉽게 정복한다

바람이 연약한 나무를 넘어뜨리듯이

더러운 것을 더럽게 보고

감각의 욕망을 잘 억제하며

먹고 마심에 절제가 있고

굳은 신념으로 정진하는 사람은

악마도 그를 정복할 수 없닥

바람이 바위산을 어찌할 수 없듯이

He who is stained (with defilements) without self-control and truthfulness, is not worthy of wearing the yellow robes.

더러운 때를 버리지 못하면서

승복을 입으려고 한다면

그는 승복 입을 자격이 없다

절제와 진실이 없기 때문에

더러운 때를 씻어 버리고

계율을 잘 지키며

절제와 진실을 지닌 사람만이

승복을 입기에 어룰리는 자다

``He abused me, he beat me, he defeated me, he robbed me,'' in those who harbour such thoughts hatred is not appeased.

그는 나를 학대했고 때리고 패배시켰고 훔쳤다. 그러한 생각을 가진 자, 증오는 사라지지 않는다.

Hate is not overcome by hate; by Love (Metta) alone is hate appeased. This is an eternal law.

The others know not that in this quarrel we perish; those of them who realise it, have their quarrels calmed thereby.

증오는 증오로 극복되지 않는다; 자비로 증오는 사라진다. 이것이 영원한 법이다.

다른사람들은 이싸움에서 우리는 사라질 것이라는 것을 알지 못한다; 그것을 깨달은 자, 싸움은 사라질 것이다.

Mind is the forerunner of (all evil) states. Mind is chief; mind-made are they. If one speaks or acts with wicked mind, suffering follows one, even as the wheel follows the hoof of the draught-ox.

마음은 모든 악의 선인이다. 마음이 주가 되나니; 모든것이 마음이 만든다. 어떤이가 사악한 마음으로 말하거나 행동하면 고통이 그를 따른다. 바퀴가 수레를 따르듯이.

The Tathagata does not live in abundance, he does not revert to the life of abundance, nor does he waver in his striving. The Tathagata is a perfected one, a fully enlightened Buddha. So give ear, for the Immortal has been discovered and I instruct, I teach the Dhamma.

여래는 풍요속에 살지 않는다. 여래는 풍요의 삶으로 돌아가지 않는다. 또한 그는 삶에 흔들리지 않는다. 여래는 완벽한 인간이다. 완전하게 깨달은 부처이다. 그러므로 귀를 주어라(경청하라), 불멸은 발견되어졌고 나는 법을 가르치기 때문이다.

수천마디 공허한 말보다

Is one word that brings peace.

평화를 가져오는 말이 더 낫다.

수천가지 공허한 시보다

Is one verse that brings peace.

평화를 가져오는 말이 더 낫다.

It is better to conquer yourself

수천의 전쟁에서 이기는 것보다 

Than to win a thousand battles.

자신을 정복하는 것이 훨씬 낫다.

Then the victory is yours. 

그러면 승리는 그대것이다.

Wisdom is purified by virtue, and virtue is purified by wisdom. Where one is, so is the other. The virtuous person has wisdom, and the wise person has virtue. The combination of virtue and wisdom is called the highest thing in the world.

지혜는 덕에 의해 정화되어지고 덕은 지혜에 의해 정화되어진다. 하나가 있는 곳에 다른 하나가 있다. 덕이 있는 사람은 지혜가 있고 지혜로운 사람은 덕이 있다. 덕과 지혜의 조합을 세상에서 가장 높은 것이라고 부른다.
