Bye Bye Bowl

Kyongho Song-u had many great successors. The most formidable was Mangong Wolmyon (1871–1946).
Once, Mangong and his successor Suwol (1855–1928) were sitting together in conversation. Suwol picked up a bowl of browned rice, a favorite Korean snack, and spoke in the paradoxical language typical of Son/Zen:
“Don’t say this is a bowl of browned rice. Don’t say this is not a bowl of browned rice. Just give me one word.”
Mangong reached over, took the bowl from Suwol and threw it as far as he could out of the window. Suwol was shocked but very pleased:
“Very good. That’s wonderful!”

잘가라 발우여

경허스님에게는 매우 훌륭한 제자들이 많이 있었다. 그중에서 가장 무서운 제자로 만공스님이 있었다.
한번은, 만공스님과 그의 제자 수월스님이 앉아서 대화중이었다. 수월스님이 한국 과자중에 현미쌀 한볼을 집어서 선의 전형적인 냉소적인 말로 말했다.
"이것을 한 볼의 현미쌀이라고 말하지도 말고, 한볼의 현미쌀이 아니라고 말하지도 마십시오.
한마디 주시겠습니까?"
만공스님은 손을 뻗어 수월스님의 발우를 빼앗아 창밖으로 최대한 멀리 던저버렸다. 수월스님은 매우 충격을 받았으나 매우 기뻤다.
"매우 훌륭합니다. 환상적입니다!"
