고요한 마음의고향

If a word has five marks it is well-spoken, not illspoken, not blameworthy or condemned by the wise. 

만약 말이 다섯가지 특징이 있다면 그것은 잘 말해진 말이고, 나쁜말이 아니고, 비난하는 말이 아니고, 지혜로운 자에 의해 비난받지 않는다.

It is spoken at the right time, it is spoken in truth, it is spoken gently, it is spoken about the goal and it is spoken with love.

정시에 말해지고, 진실을 말하고, 부드럽게 말해지고, 목표에 대해 말해지고 사랑을 가지고 말해지는 것이 그것이다.

In giving food, the giver gives five things. 

음식을 줄때, 주는자는 다섯가지 물건을 준다.

What five? 

무슨 다섯가지인가?

He gives life, beauty, happiness, strength and intelligence. 

그는 삶,아름다움,행복,힘 그리고 지능을 준다.

And in giving these things, one partakes in the qualities of life, beauty, happiness, strength and intelligence 

both here and hereafter.

그리고 이러한 것들을 줄때, 그는 삶,아름다움,행복,힘과 지능 그리고 현생과 내생 모두에 참여햐게 된다.

By three things the wise person may be known.

세가지 특성으로 지혜로운 사람을 알 수 있다.

What three? 

무슨 세가지인가?

He sees a shortcoming as it is. 

그는 결과를 있는 그대로 본다.

When he sees it, he tries to correct it. 

그가 결과를 볼때, 그는 결과를 고치려고 노력한다.

And when another acknowledges a shortcoming, the wise one forgives it as he should.

그리고 다른사람들이 결과를 인정할때, 지혜로운 자는 그가 그래야 하는 것처럼 그것을 용서한다.(?)

With four qualities the wise, intelligent, worthy person goes about  not uprooted, not lifeless, not 

blameworthy, not censured by the wise. 

네가지 특성으로 지혜로운 자, 똑똑한 자, 가치있는 자는 지혜로운 자에 의해서 없어지지 않고 죽지 않고 비난받지 않고 

혹평을 받지 않는다.

What four? With good conduct of body, speech and mind, and with gratitude, with gratefulness.

무엇이 네가지인가? 몸으로 하는 선한 행동, 말과 공경하는 마음과 감사의 마음이다.

uproot : 뿌리를 뽑다, 근절시키다.

lifeless : 생명없는, 죽은

blameworthy : 나무랄만한

censure : 비난,혹평

Whoever follows the Dhamma

법을 따르는 자는 누구나

Should take no drink or 

술을 마셔서는 안되고

Encourage others to drink, 

다른이로 하여금 마시게 해서도 안된다.

Knowing that intoxication is the result.

왜냐하면 결과로 취하기 때문에.

Because of intoxication,

술에 취함으로써

The fool commits evil deeds

어리석은 자는 악한 행동을 저지르고

And makes others negligent too.

다른이들도 부주의하게 만든다.

So, avoid this root of wrong,

그러므로, 이러한 잘못의 뿌리를 피하라,

This folly loved only by fools.

이러한 어리석은 자는 어리석은 자에 의해서만 사랑받는다.

folly : 어리석은 것

Greed is to be slightly blamed but it is slow to change. 

탐욕은 약간 비난받고 천천히 변한다.

Hatred is to be greatly blamed but it is quick to change.

증오는 많이 비난받고 빠르게 변한다. 

Delusion is to be greatly blamed and it is slow to change.

어리석음은 많이 비난받고 천천히 변한다.

Mahali said to the Lord:

Mahali가 부처님께 말씀드렸다.

 "Sir, what is the reason, what is the cause of doing, of committing an evil deed?"

 "부처님, 악행을 하는 이유와 원인이 무엇입니까?"

 "Greed, hatred, delusion, not paying proper attention and wrongly directed thoughts - these are the reasons, 

these are the causes of doing, of committing an evil deed."

 "탐욕,증오,어리석음,적절한 주의를 기울이지 않는것과 잘못된 방향으로의 사고, 이것들이 악행을 저지르는 이유와 원

인들이다."

 "Then what, sir, is the reason, what is the cause of doing, of committing a beautiful deed?"

 "그렇다면, 부처님, 선행을 하는 이유와 원인은 무엇입니까?"

 "Generosity, love, wisdom, paying attention and rightly directed thought - these are the reasons, these are the 

causes of doing, of committing a beautiful deed."

 "관대함, 사랑, 지혜, 주의를 기울이는 것, 바른 방향으로의 생각, 이것들이 선행을 하는 이유와 원인들이다."

It is certain that a clod of earth

땅의 흙을 하늘로 던지면

Thrown into the sky will fall to the ground;

땅으로 떨어지듯이

So too the words of the supreme Buddha

그렇듯 역시 위대한 부처님의 말씀은

Are always certain and reliable.

언제나 확실하고 신뢰할만하다.

It is certain that the sun will rise

밤의 어둠이 사라지면 

When the darkness of night fades away;

태양이 떠오르듯이

So too the words of the supreme Buddha

그렇듯 역시 위대한 부처님의 말씀은

Are always certain and reliable.

언제나 확실하고 신뢰할만하다.

It is certain that the lion will roar

사자가 굴에서 나올때

As it emerges from its den;

포효하는 듯이

So too the words of the supreme Buddha

그렇듯 역시 위대한 부처님의 말씀은

Are always certain and reliable.

언제나 확실하고 신뢰할만하다.

clod : 흙

emerge : 나타나다

den : 굴

"What do you think about this?" said the Lord. 

"어떻게 생각하느냐?" 부처님께서 말씀하셨다.

"What is the purpose of a mirror?"

"거울의 목적이 무엇이냐?"

"It is for the purpose of reflection, sir," replied Rahula.

"모양을 반사시켜주는 목적이 있습니다.부처님." Rahula가 대답했다.

"Even so, an action to be done by body, speech or mind should only be done after careful reflection."

"그러할진대, 몸과 입과 마음으로 행해진 행위는 신중한 반영뒤에 행해져야만 한다."

If you have no satisfactory teacher, then take this sure Dhamma and practise it. 

만약 마음에 드는 스승이 없다면, 이 법을 받아서 수행하라.

For the Dhamma is sure, and when rightly undertaken it will be to your welfare and happiness for a long time.

왜냐하면 법은 확실하기 때문이다. 그리고 정확하게 받아들여지면 그것은 오랫동안 너의 행복과 번영이 될 것이다.
