Going With the Flow

A Taoist story tells of an old man who accidentally fell into the river rapids leading to a high and dangerous 

waterfall. 

한 도에 관한 이야기중에 한 노인이 사고로 높고 위험한 절벽으로 인도하는 급류에 떨어진 이야기가있다.

Onlookers feared for his life. 

방관자들은 그의 목숨을 두려워했다.(구경꾼들은 노인이 목숨을 잃을까 두려워했다.)

Miraculously, he came out alive and unharmed downstream at the bottom of the falls. 

기적적으로,그는 살아서 나왔고 폭포의 바닥 하류에 아무런 해도 입지 않았다.

People asked him how he managed to survive.

사람들은 그가 어떻게 살았는지 물었다.

“I accommodated myself to the water, not the water to me. 

 "나는 물에 적응했다, 물을 나에게 적응시키지 않고.

Without thinking, I allowed myself to be shaped by it. 

생각하지않고, 나는 나 자신을 물에 동조하도록 허용했다.

Plunging into the swirl, I came out with the swirl. This is how I survived.”

소용돌이에 들어가서, 소용돌이와 함께 나왔다. 이것이 내가 살아난 방법이다."

Gates of Paradise

A soldier named Nobushige came to Hakuin, and asked: “Is there really a paradise and a hell?”

Nobushige라는 군인이 Hakuin선사에게 와서 물었다. "천국과 지옥이 정말 있습니까?"

“Who are you?” inquired Hakuin.

 "당신은 누구요?" Hakuin선사가 물었다.

“I am a samurai,” the warrior replied.

 "무사입니다." 군인이 대답했다.

“You, a soldier!” exclaimed Hakuin.

 "당신,군인!" Hakuin선사가 외쳤다.

“What kind of ruler would have you as his guard? Your face looks like that of a beggar.”

 "그의 보호자로 어떤 통치자를 당신은 가지고 있소? 당신의 얼굴은 마치 거지와 같소."

Nobushige became so angry that he began to draw his sword, but Hakuin continued: 

Nobushige는 매우 화가 나서 그의 칼을 뽑기 시작했다. 하지만 Hakuin선사는 계속했다.

“So you have a sword! Your weapon is probably much too dull to cut off my head.”

 "칼을 가지고 있구만! 내 머리를 자르기에는 그 칼이 너무 무딘거 같구만."

As Nobushige drew his sword Hakuin remarked: “Here open the gates of hell!”

Nobushige가 칼을 뽑았을떄 Hakuin선사가 대답했다. "여기 지옥의 문이 열리는 구나!"

At these words the samurai, perceiving the master’s discipline, sheathed his sword and bowed.

이말에 무사는 선사의 가르침을 이해하고 그의 칼을 다시넣고 절하였다.

“Here open the gates of paradise,” said Hakuin.

 "여기 천국의 문이 열리는구나" 선사가 말했다.

Fleeing the Tiger

A man traveling across a field encountered a tiger. 

들판을 가로질러 여행하는 한 남자가 호랑이와 마주쳤다.

He fled, the tiger after him. 

그는 달아났고 호랑이가 그를 뒤쫓았다.

Coming to a precipice, he caught hold of the root of a wild vine and swung himself down over the edge. 

절벽에 다다라서, 야생포도나무의 뿌리를 잡고 가장자링에 매달려 있었다.

The tiger sniffed at him from above. 

호랑이가 위에서 코를 킁킁거리고 있었다.

Trembling, the man looked down to where, far below, another tiger was waiting to eat him. 

전율을 느끼며 남자는 아래를 보았다. 아래에는 다른 호랑이가 그를 잡아먹으려고 기다리고 있었다.

Only the vine sustained him.

포도나무 줄기만이 그를 지지해 주고 있었다.

Two mice, one white and one black, little by little started to gnaw away the vine. 

흰색과 검은색의 두마리 쥐가 포도나무줄기를 서서히 갉아먹기 시작했다.

The man saw a luscious strawberry near him. 

남자는 가까이에 아주 달콤한 딸기를 보았다.

Grasping the vine with one hand, he plucked the strawberry with the other. How sweet it tasted!

한손으로 줄기를 잡고, 다른 손으로 딸기를 땄다. 그 맛이란!

Fire-Poker Zen

Hakuin used to tell his pupils about an old woman who had a teashop, praising her understanding of Zen. 

Hakuin선사는 그의 제자들에게 그녀의 선에 대한 이해를 자랑하는 한 찻집 노파에 대해 얘기하곤 했다.

The pupils refused to believe what he told them and would go to the teashop to find out for themselves.

제자들은 그말을 믿지 않아 직접 알아보기 위해 찻집으로 갔다.

Whenever the woman saw them coming she could tell at once whether they had come for tea or to look into her 

grasp of Zen. 

그녀는 그들이 오는 것을 볼때마다 차마시러 오는건지 아니면 선에 대한 이해를 조사하러 오는 건지 알수있었다.

In the former case, she would serve them graciously. 

전자같은 경우면 그녀는 우아하게 그들을 대접했다.

In the latter, she would beckon the pupils to come behind her screen. 

후자면, 그녀의 스크린 뒤로 그 제자들을 유혹하곤 했다.

The instant they obeyed, she would strike them with a fire-poker.

그들이 그렇게 하는 순간, 불쏘시개로 그들을 때리곤 했다.

Nine out of ten of them could not escape her beating.

10에 아홉은 그녀에게서 도망칠수가 없었다.

Falling Flowers

Subhuti was Buddha’s disciple. 

Subhuti는 부처님의 제자였다.

He was able to understand the potency of emptiness, the viewpoint that nothing exists except in its relationship 

of subjectivity and objectivity.

그는 주관과 객관의 관계외에는 아무것도 존재하지 않는다는 견해인 공의 효력을 이해할수 있었다.

One day Subhuti, in a mood of sublime emptiness, was sitting under a tree. Flowers began to fall about him.

어느날 고상한 공의 무드에 있던 Subhuti가 나무아래 앉아있었다. 꽃들이 그에게로 떨어지기 시작했다.

“We are praising you for your discourse on emptiness,” the gods whispered to him.

 "우리는 당신의 공에 대한 강연을 찬양합니다." 신들이 그에게 속삭였다.

“But I have not spoken of emptiness,” said Subhuti.

 "하지만 나는 공에대해 말하지 않았습니다." Subhuti가 말했다.

“You have not spoken of emptiness, we have not heard emptiness,” responded the gods.

 "당신은 공에 대해 말하지 않았고 우리는 공에 대해 듣지 않았습니다." 신들이 대답했다.

“This is true emptiness.” And blossoms showered upon Subhuto as rain.

 "이것이 진정한 공입니다." 그러자 꽃들이 비처럼 Subhuto에게 내렸다.

Everything is Best

When Banzan was walking through a market he overheard a conversation between a butcher and his customer.

Banzan이 시장을 걸어가고 있을때 그는 정육점주인과 손님의 대화를 옅듣게 되었다.

“Give me the best piece of meat you have,” said the customer.

 "당신이 가진 고기중에 가장 좋은 고기로 주시오." 손님이 말했다.

“Everything in my shop is the best,” replied the butcher.

 "내 가게의 모든 고기는 다 최고요." 정육점주인이 대답했다.

“You cannot find here any piece of meat that is not the best.”

 "최고가 아닌 고기는 여기서는 찾을수 없소이다."

At these words Banzan became enlightened.

이 말에 Banzan이 깨달음을 얻었다.

Every Minute Zen

Zen students are with their masters at least ten years before they presume to teach others. 

선의 제자들은 다른 이들을 가르치기 위한 준비가 되기전에는 그들의 스승과 적어도 10년은 같이 있는다.

Nan-in was visited by Tenno, who, having passed his apprenticeship, had become a teacher. 

그의 견습생시절을 패스해서 스승이 된 Tenno에의해 Nan-in이 방문을 받았다.

The day happened to be rainy, so Tenno wore wooden clogs and carried an umbrella. 

마침 비가 와서, Tenno는 나막신을 신고 우산을 들고 있었다.

After greeting him Nan-in remarked:

인사를 한후에 Nan-in이 말했다.

 “I suppose you left your wooden clogs in the vestibule. 

  "당신의 나막신을 현관에 벗어놓은 걸로 생각되는데

I want to know if your umbrella is on the right or left side of the clogs.”

당신의 우산이 나막신의 오른쪽에 있는지 왼쪽에 있는지 알고 싶군요."

Tenno, confused, had no instant answer. 

Tenno는 혼란스러워 즉각적으로 대답을 못했다.

He realized he was unable to carry his Zen every minute. 

그는 매순간 깨어있지 못했음을 알아차렸다.

He became Nan-in’s pupil, and studied six more years to accomplish his every-minute Zen.

그는 Nan-in의 제자가 되어 그의 순간순간 깨어있음을 성취하기 위해 6년을 더 공부했다.

Eshun’s Departure

When Eshun, the Zen nun, was past sixty and about to leave this world, she asked some monks to pile up wood in 

the yard.

비구니선사 Eshun이 60세가 넘어 이 세상을 떠나려할때, 그녀는 몇몇 승려들에게 마당에 나무를 쌓을것을 요구했다.

Seating herself firmly in the center of the funeral pyre, she had it set fire around the edges.

장작더미 가운데 바르게 앉아서 가장자리에서 불을 지피도록 했다.

“O nun!” shouted one monk, “is it hot in there?”

 "선사시여!" 한 승려가 외쳤다. "그곳이 뜨겁습니까?"

“Such a matter would concern only a stupid person like yourself,” answered Eshun. 

  "그러한 문제는 당신같은 어리석은 사람에게나 해당되는 얘깁니다." Eshun이 대답했다.

The flames arose, and she passed away.

불꽃이 일었고 그녀는 입적했다.

Enlightened

One day the Master announced that a young monk had reached an advanced state of enlightment. 

어느날 선사가 젊은 승려가 깨달음의 높은 단계에 도달했다고 말했다.

The news caused some stir. 

그 소식은 혼란을 일으켰다.

Some of the monks went to see the young monk.

몇몇 승려들이 그 젊은 승려를 보러 갔다.

“We heard you are enlightened. Is that true?” they asked.

  "우리는 당신이 깨달았다고 들었습니다. 그게 사실입니까?" 그들이 물었다.

“It is,” he replied.

 "그렇습니다." 그가 대답했다.

“And how do you feel?”

 "그러면 어떤 느낌인지요?"

“As miserable as ever,” said the monk.

 "최악입니다." 승려가 말했다.

Empty Your Cup

A university professor went to visit a famous Zen master. 

한 대학교수가 유명한 선사를 방문하기 위해 갔다.

While the master quietly served tea, the professor talked about Zen. 

선사가 조용히 차를 대접하는 동안, 교수는 선에 대해 이야기했다.

The master poured the visitor’s cup to the brim, and then kept pouring. 

선사가 교수의 컵에 넘치게 잔을 따르고는 계속해서 따랐다.

The professor watched the overflowing cup until he could no longer restrain himself.

교수는 넘치는 컵을 보고는 더이상 참지 못했다.

 “It’s overfull! No more will go in!” the professor blurted.

  "꽉 찼어요! 더이상 들어가지 않는다구요!" 교수가 무심결에 말했다.

 “You are like this cup,” the master replied, “How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup.”

  "당신은 마치 이컵과 같습니다. 먼저 당신의 컵을 비우지 않는다면 제가 어떻게 선에 대해서 보여줄수 있겠습니까?"

선사가 대답했다.
