Bicycle

A Zen Teacher saw five of his students return from the market, riding their bicycles. 

한선사가 그의 5명의 제자들이 시장에서 자전거를 타고 돌아오는 것을 보았다.

When they had dismounted, the teacher asked the students,

그들이 내리자 스승이 물었다.

“Why are you riding your bicycles?”

 "왜 자전거를 타고 있느냐?"

The first student replied, “The bicycle is carrying this sack of potatoes. I am glad that I do not have to 

carry them on my back!”

첫번째 학생이 대답했다. "자전거로 이 감자를 운반하려구요. 제 등에 그것을 짊어지지 않아서 기뻐요!"

The teacher praised the student, saying, “You are a smart boy. When you grow old, you will not walk hunched 

over, as I do.”

스승은 제자를 칭찬하며 말했다. "참 똑똑하구나. 나중에 늙으면 나처럼 등을 구부리고 걷지는 않겠구나."

The second student replied, “I love to watch the trees and fields pass by as I roll down the path.”

두번째 학생이 대답했다. "저는 길따라 올때 나무와 들판을 보는 것을 좋아합니다.(그래서 자전거를 탔습니다.)"

The teacher commended the student, “Your eyes are open and you see the world.”

스승이 제자를 칭찬하며 말하였다. "너의 눈은 열려있고 세상을 보는구나."

The third student replied, “When I ride my bicycle, I am content to chant, nam myoho renge kyo.”

세번째 제자가 대답했다. "자전거를 탈때, 저는 염불을 마음껏 합니다. namo myoho renge kyo.(나무 묘법연화경)"

The teacher gave praise to the third student, “Your mind will roll with the ease of a newly trued wheel.”

스승이 세번째 제자를 칭찬했다. "너의 마음은 새롭게 진실된 바퀴의 넉넉함과 함께 굴러가겠구나."

The fourth student answered, “Riding my bicycle, I live in harmony with all beings.”

네번째 제자가 대답했다. "자전거를 타면, 모든 존재와 조화속에 삽니다."

The teacher was pleased and said, “You are riding on the golden path of non-harming.”

스승이 기뻐하며 말했다. "너는 해침없음의 금색 길위에서 자전거를 타고 있구나."

The fifth student replied, “I ride my bicycle to ride my bicycle.”

다섯번째 제자가 대답했다. "저는 자전거를 타기위해 자전거를 탑니다."

The teacher went and sat at the feet of the fifth student, and said, “I am your disciple.”

스승이 가서 다섯번째 제자의 발에 앉아서 말했다. "내가 너의 스승이다."

dismount : 내리다

hunch : 구부리다

commend : 칭찬하다

Bell Teacher

A new student approached the Zen master and asked how he should prepare himself for his training.

신입학생이 선사에게 다가와서 그가 선사의 훈육을 어떻게 준비해야 하는지 물었다.

 “Think of me as a bell,” the master explained.

  "나를 종처럼 생각해라." 선사가 설명했다.

 “Give me a soft tap, and you will get a tiny ping.

  "부드럽게 쳐보면 작은 핑소리가 날것이다.

Strike hard, and you’ll receive a loud, resounding peal.”

세게치면 크게 울려퍼지는 포탄소리가 들릴것이다."

resound : 울려퍼지다

peal : (포탄)울림

Announcement

Tanzan wrote sixty postal cards on the last day of his life,

and asked an attendant to mail them. 

Tanzan은 그의 마지막 날에 60장의 우편엽서를 써서 그것들을 붙여달라고 시자에게 부탁했다.

Then he passed away.

그리고는 입적했다.

The cards read:

카드에는 이렇게 쓰여있었다:

I am departing from this world.

나는 이 세상으로부터 떠난다.

This is my last announcement.

이것이 나의 마지막 유언이다.

Tanzan

July

27, 1892

Sen no Rikyu, a tea-master, wished to hang a flower basket on a column. 

Sen no Rikyu선사가 꽃바구니를 원주에 달려고 했다.

He asked a carpenter to help him, directing the man to place it a little higher or lower, to the right or left, 

until he had found exactly the right spot. 

그는 목수에게 도움을 요청해 딱맞는 지점을 찾기까지 좀더 높게 또는 낮게 또는 오른쪽 왼쪽 하면서 목수에게 지시했다.

“That”s the place,” said Sen no Rikya finally.

 "거기가 딱 좋겠네." 마침내 선사가 말했다.

The carpenter, to test the master, marked the spot and then pretended he had forgotten. 

목수는 선사를 시험하기 위해 그 지점을 마크해놓고는 잊어버린척 했다.

Was this the place?

여기가 거깁니까? 

“Was this the place, perhaps?” the carpenter kept asking, pointing to various places on the column.

 "여기가 아마 거기지요?" 목수는 계속 물었다. 원주의 여기저기를 가리키면서.

But so accurate was the tea-master”s sense of proportion that it was not until the carpenter reached the 

identical spot again that its location was approved.

하지만 선사의 감각이 하도 정확해서 정확한 지점을 가리켰을때 그 지점은 승인되었다.

A Smile in His Lifetime

평생의 미소

Mokugen was never known to smile until his last day on earth. 

Mokugen은 지구에서 그의 마지막 날까지 웃음이라는 것을 몰랐다.

When his time came to pass away he said to his faithful ones: 

죽을날이 왔을때 그는 그의 신자들에게 말했다.

“You have studied under me for more than ten years. 

 "당신들은 내 밑에서 10년이상 공부했다.

Show me your real interpretation of Zen.

나에게 당신들의 선에 대한 진정한 해석을 보여주시오. Whoever expresses this most clearly shall by my successor and 

receive my robe and bowl.”

이것을 가장 명확하게 표현하는 자는 나의 후계자가 될것이고 나의 가사와 발우를 받을거이오."

Everyone watched Mokugen’s severe face, but no one answered.

모두가 Mokugen의 진지한 얼굴을 보았지만 아무도 대답하지 않았다.

Encho, a disciple who had been with his teacher for a long time, moved near the bedside. 

Encho, 그의 스승과 오랜시간 함께 했던 제자 하나가 옆으로 옮겨왔다.

He pushed forward the medicine cup a few inches. 

그는 약사발을 몇 인치 앞으로 밀었다.

This was his answer to the command.

이것이 그의 답이었다.

The teacher’s face became even more severe. 

스승의 얼굴이 더 심각하게 변했다.

“Is that all you understand?” he asked.

 "이것이 다인가?" 그가 물었다.

Encho reached out and moved the cup back again.

Encho는 손을 뻗어 그 사발을 다시 제자리에 가져다 놓았다.

A beautiful smile broke over the features of Mokugen. 

아름다운 미소가 Mokugen의 얼굴에 일었다.

“You rascal,” he told Encho. 

 "이 악당놈아," 그는 Encho에게 말했다.

“You worked with me ten years and have not yet seen my whole body. 

 "너는 나와 10년을 공부했는데 나의 전신을 아직 보지 못했구나.

Take the robe and bowl. They belong to you.”

가사와 발우를 가져가라. 그것들은 너의 것이다."

A Mother’s Advice

엄마의 충고

Jiun, a Shingon master, was a well-known Sanskrit scholar of the Tokugawa era. 

Jiun, Shingon 선사는 Tokugawa시대에 산스크리트 학자로 유명했다.

When he was young he used to deliver lectures to his brother students. 

그가 어렸을때 그의 형제 학생들에게 강의를 하곤 했었다.

His mother heard about this and wrote him a letter:

그의 어머니가 이 말을 듣고는 편지를 썼다.

“Son, I do not think you became a devotee of the Buddha because you desire to turn into a walking dictionary for 

others. 

 "아들아, 나는 네가 다른사람들에게 걸어다니는 사전이 되기를 원했기 때문에 부처님께 헌신하는 자가 되리라 생각하지 

않는다.

There is no end to information and commentation, glory and honour. 

정보와 해설, 영광과 명예에는 끝이 없다.

I wish you would stop this lecture business. 

나는 니가 이 강의를 그만두기를 바란다.

Shut yourself up in a little temple in a remote part of the mountain. 

산속에 떨어진 암자에 들어가 침묵을 하거라.

Devote your time to meditation and in this way attain true realization.”

명상에 전념하여 진정한 깨달음을 얻어라."

devotee : 헌신자,귀의자

commentation : 해설

A great official came to the master Takuan asking for help in passing his days more eventfully. 

한 고위직 관리가 Takuan 선사에게 와서 그의 인생을 더욱더 파란만장하게 보내는 방법에 대해 물었다.

All day long, he explained, he sat receiving supplications and reports, and he found it all very dull. 

하루종일, 그는 설명했다. 그는 앉아서 기원과 보고를 들었지만 그것이 매우 멍청한 것이라는 것을 알았다.

Takuan took brush and paper, and wrote eight Chinese characters. Translated, they said:

Takuan은 종이와 붓을 가져와서 8개의 한자를 썼다. 번역하면:

No day comes back again:

One inch of time is worth

A foot of jade.

어떤 날도 돌아오지 않는다네:

한인치의 시간이 

한풋의 옥의 가치가 있네.

A Buddha

부처

In Tokyo in the Meiji era there lived two prominent teachers of opposite characteristics. 

토쿄 메이지 시대에 상반되는 성격을 가진 두명의 눈에 띄는 스승이 살고 있었다.

One, Unsho, an instructor in Shingon, kept Buddha’s precepts scrupulously. 

한명은,Unsho로 Shingo에서 가르쳤으며 부처의 가르침을 철저하게 지켰다.

He never drank intoxicants, nor did he eat after eleven o’clock in the morning. 

그는 술을 절대 마시지 않았으며,오전 11시이후에는 먹지 않았다.

The other teacher, Tanzan, a professor of philosophy at the Imperial University, never observed the precepts.

다른 스승인 Tanzan은 Imperial대학의 철학교수였는데 가르침을 절대 따르지 않았다.

When he felt like eating, he ate, and when he felt like sleeping in the daytime, he slept.

먹고 싶을때 먹고,자고 싶을때는 낮에도 잤다.

One day Unsho visited Tanzan, who was drinking wine at the time, not even a drop of which is supposed to touch 

the tongue of a Buddhist.

어느날 Unsho가 Tanzan을 방문했는데 술을마시고 있었다. 불교도의 혀에는 한방울도 허용되지 않는 술을.

“Hello, brother,” Tanzan greeted him. “Won’t you have a drink?”

 "여보게,사제" Tanzan이 그를 반겼다. "한잔할텐가?"

“I never drink!” exclaimed Unsho solemnly.

 "술을 절대 안마십니다!" Unsho는 단호하게 외쳤다.

“One who does not drink is not even human,” said Tanzan.

 "술을 마시지 않는 사람은 사람도 아니지." Tanzan이 말했다.

“Do you mean to call me inhuman just because I do not indulge in intoxicating liquids!” exclaimed Unsho in 

anger. 

 "제가 그 취하게 하는 액체를 마시지 않는다는 이유로 저를 인간이 아니라고 하십니까?" Unsho가 화가나서 소리쳤다.

“Then if I am not human, what am I?”

 "제가 인간이 아니라면, 그럼 뭡니까?"

“A Buddha,” answered Tanzan.

 "부처지" Tanzan이 대답했다.

* scrupulously : 고지식하게

* intoxicant : 술,취하게하는

* indulge : 실컷마시다.
