The Most Valuable Thing in the World
Sozan, a Chinese Zen master, was asked by a student: “What is the most valuable thing in the world?”
The master replied: “The head of a dead cat.”
“Why is the head of a dead cat the most valuable thing in the world?” inquired the student.
Sozan replied: “Because no one can name its price.”

세상에서 가장 가치있는 것
중국 선사 Sozan에게 한 제자가 물었다.
"세상에서 가장 가치있는 것은 무엇입니까?"
선사가 말씀하시길,
"죽은 고양이 대가리이니라."
"왜 죽은 고양이 대가리가 세상에서 가장 가치있는 것입니까?"
제자가 여쭈었다.
Sozan선사가 대답하길,
"왜냐하면 누구도 그것의 값어치를 말할수 없기 때문이다."

No form, no sound.
Here I am;
White clouds fringing the peaks,
River cutting through the valley.
- Daito

형태도, 소리도 없다.
여기 내가 있다;
흰 구름들이 산봉우리 언저리에 있고,
강은 계곡 사이를 자른다.

That Damn Stick
Yamaoka Tesshu, a young student of Zen, visited one master after another. Soon enough, he called upon Master Dokuon of Shokoku.
Desiring to show off his wisdom, Tesshu said:
“The mind, Buddha, and all sentient beings do not exist. The true nature of phenomena is emptiness. There is no realization, no delusion, no master, no Buddha. There is no giving and nothing to be received.”
Dokuon, who was sitting and smoking quietly, said nothing. Suddenly he whacked Yamaoka with his bamboo stick. This made the youth quite angry:
“Why did you hit me with that damn stick!?”
“If nothing exists,” inquired Dokuon, “what is this damn stick you speak of?”

염병할 막대기
  Yamoka Tesshu 선의 젊은 학생이 어느날 한 선사를 찾아갔다. 즉, Shokoku의 Dokuon 선사를 찾아갔다.
  그의 지혜를 자랑하기 위해 Tesshu는 말했다.
  "마음, 부처님, 모든 중생들은 존재하지 않습니다. 현상의 진실한 본성은 공입니다. 해탈도 망상도, 선사님, 부처님도 없습니다. 주는것이 없기에 받는 것도 없습니다."
  앉아서 조용히 담배피던 Dukuon선사는 아무말도 하지 않았다. 갑자기 그는 그의 대나무 
막대기로 Yamaoka를 때렸다. 이것은 그를 매우 화나게 했다.
  "왜 그 염병할 막대기로 나를 때렸습니까?"
  "만약 아무것도 존재하지 않는다면," Dokuon선사가 물었다.
  "니가 말하는 이 염병할 막대기는 무엇이냐?"

93. The Buddha then entered into meditation, deeper and deeper, until his mind was purely balanced and steadily focused. And then he passed away. Thus, the Buddha, the Blessed One, had attained that final freedom known as nirvana. Soon after the death of the Buddha a meeting of 500 arahants was held to collect together all his teachings. They were memorised and handed down from one generation of monks to the next. In this way, the teachings of the Buddha were not lost, and we can still hear them today.

93. 그리고 부처님께서는 깊고 깊은 명상속에 드셔서 그의 마음이 완전히 균형잡히고 집중이 꾸준해질때까지 명상을 하셨다. 그리고는 돌아가셨다. 그럼으로써 축복받은 자, 부처님께서는 열반이라고 알려진 마지막 자유를 얻으셨다. 부처님께서 입멸하신후 500명의 아라한들은 함께 모여 부처님의 가르침을 결집하는 행사를 열었다. 그들은 이런식으로 다음세대의 비구들에게 가르침을 암송하고 글로 적어 부처님의 가르침은 잊혀지지 않았고 우리들은 현대에도 부처님의 가르침을 들을수 있게 되었다.

92. Later the Buddha gave the monks and nuns the last chance to ask any questions. He asked them if any of them still had doubts about the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha. But none of them had any doubts about the Triple Gem. Finally the Buddha said to the monks: "Monks, this is the last time for me to talk to you. All things change. Work hard to gain your own salvation!"

92. 나중에 부처님께서는 비구와 비구니에게 마지막으로 질문할 기회를 주셨다. 부처님께서는 그들 누구에게나 부처님과 법 그리고 상가에 대해 의문점을 가지고 있는지 물어셨다. 하지만 그들 누구도 삼보에 대헤 어떤 의문도 없었다. 마지막으로 부처님은 비구들에게 말씀하셨다. 
"비구들이여, 이것이 너희들에게 얘기하는 마지막 시간이다. 모든것은 변한다. 자신의 해탈을 얻기 위해 열심히 정진하라."

91. But Subhadda was very anxious to see the Buddha and asked Ananda again and again. When the Buddha heard them both talking, he knew Subhadda's good motivation. So he told Ananda to let Subhadda come in. Having listened to Subhadda's questions, the Buddha taught him until any problems in Subhadda's mind were cleared up. Subhadda gained confidence in the Buddha and the Dharma and asked the Buddha to accept him as a monk. Thus Subhadda became the last person to be ordained by the Buddha.

91. 하지만 Subhadda는 부처님을 뵙기를 너무 열망하여서 Ananda에게 계속 요청했습니다. 부처님꼐서 그들 둘이 얘기하는 것을 들으셨을떄, 부처님은 Subhadda의 훌륭한 동기에 대해 아셨습니다. 그래서 부처님께서는 Ananda에게 Subhadda를 들어오게 말씀하셨습니다. Subhadda의 질문을 들으신후 부처님께서는 Subhadda의 마음의 어떤 문제든지 완전히 깨끗해 질떄까지 가르치셨습니다.  Subhadda는 부처님과 법에 자신감을 얻어서 부처님께 비구로 받아들여주시기를 요청하였습니다. 그래서 Subhadda는 부처님께 마지막으로 계를 받은 사람이 되었습니다.

90. A wandering young man from an ascetic cult, whose name was Subhadda, happened to be in Kusinara. When he learnt that the Buddha was about to enter the final nirvana, he decided to visit him. He wanted to ask the Buddha some questions that bothered him. He believed that only the Buddha would be able to give him a thorough explanation. So he went to Salavana, and asked Ananda to allow him to see the Buddha. However Ananda refused him permission, as he thought that the Buddha was too tired to see visitors.
90. 금욕주의를 숭배하는 한 방랑청년,이름이 Subhadda인 청년이 우연찮게 Kusinara에 있게 되었다. 그가 부처님께서 열반에 드실것을 알았을때, 그는 부처님을 친견하기로 결심했다. 그는 그를 괴롭히는 몇가지 문제들을 부처님께 여쭤보기를 원했다. 그는 오직 부처님만이 그에게 철저한 설명을 해주실수 있다고 믿었다. 그래서 그는 Salavana에가서 Ananda에게 부처님을 친견하도록 허락해줄 것을 청했다. 그러나 Ananda는 불허했다. 왜냐하면 부처님께서는 방문자들을 친견하시기에 너무 피곤하시다고 생각했기 때문이었다.

89. When the people of Kusinara learnt that the Buddha was about to enter nirvana, they all felt very sad and cried. They said: "It is too early for the Buddha to enter final nirvana. The light of the world is going to be extinguished too soon!" Men, women and children, crying loudly, went to Salavana, where the Buddha was staying. They all hoped to see the Buddha one more time.

89. 부처님께서 열반에 드실 것을 알게된 쿠시나라 사람들은 모두 매우 큰 슬픔을 느끼며 울었습니다. 말하길,"최종열반에 이르시기는 너무 이르십니다. 세상의 빛이 곧 사라지려 하고 있습니다." 남자, 여자 그리고 아이들은 크게 울부짖었으며 부처님께서 계신 살라바나로 갔습니다. 그들 모두는 모두 부처님을 한번 더 친견하려고 희망하였습니다.

88. The Buddha said to Ananda: "No Ananda, do not say that. This is not a small and insignificant place. Long ago this was a prosperous city, and the residence of a righteous king. Ananda, go to Kusinara and tell the king and the people that late tonight the Buddha will enter the final nirvana in this forest. If they wish to, they should come to see me before this time." So Ananda went to Kusinara with several monks and told King Malla and his people what the Buddha had said.

88. 부처님께서 아난다에게 말씀하셨습니다. "아니다 아난다여, 그렇게 말하지 말아라. 여기는 작고 중요하지 않은 장소가 아니다. 옛날에 여기는 번성하는 도시였고 정의로운 왕의 거주지였다. 아난다여, 쿠시나라에 가서 왕과 사람들에게 오늘 밤 늦게 여래는 이 숲속에서 열반에 들거라고 말하거라. 그들이 원한다면, 이시간 전에 꼭 와서 나를 봐야할 것이다." 그래서 아난다는 몇명의 비구들과 쿠시나라에 가서 말라왕과 그의 백성들에게 부처님께서 말씀하신것을 말했습니다.

87. On Ananda's return, the Buddha praised him in front of the other monks. He told them: "Ananda has, at all times, been my most excellent attendant. He knew how to arrange just the right time for me to meet with visitors. He always treated all visitors well." Later, Ananda said to the Buddha: "Lord Buddha, please do not enter nirvana in such a small and unimportant place. Please select one of the large cities, such as Rajagaha or Vesali, and enter the final nirvana there. In those cities there are many rich and powerful people who are your disciples. They can take responsibility for your holy remains."

87. 아난다가 돌아오자, 부처님께서는 다른 비구들앞에서 그를 칭찬하셨다. 말씀하시기를,
"아난다는 모든 시간에 나의 가장 훌륭한 시자였다. 그는 나에게 방문자들을 만날 적기를 알고 조정하였다. 그는 항상 모든 방문자들을 잘 대접했다." 후에, 아난다가 부처님께 말씀드렸다. "거룩한 부처님이시여, 그렇게 작고 중요하지 않은 장소에서 열반에 들지 마십시오. 라자가하 또는 베살리같은 큰도시를 고르셔서 그곳에서 열반에 드십시오. 그곳에는 당신의 제자들인 부유하고 강한권력의 사람들이 많습니다. 그들은 당신의 성스러운 유물을 잘 책임질 것입니다."
